For story time, kindergarten teacher Veneranda Sanchez positioned her chair in the doorframe of her classroom with her students seated on the carpet, fanned out in a wide pie shape in front of her.

Although her shoulder and back tilt into the narrow hallway, Sanchez discovered it was the best configuration to read to students after trying several layouts within the confines of her room’s tricky floor plan that reflects the apartment it once was.

“I wish I could do different learning centers, but as you can see, there is not enough room,” said Sanchez, pointing to various spots. “But we do what we can do make it work.”

Like her colleagues at Phoenix Metro Islamic School, Sanchez has come up with ways to make the most of her space in the apartment complex-turned private school campus.
